COMMUNITIES TAKE ROOT
On August 14, 2010 the Southside Virginia Family YMCA, along with local community members, Y board members, the Hampden-Sydney football team and Congressman Tom Perriello, gathered together to plant a fruit orchard. This orchard consists of 51 fruit trees including apples, pears, figs, peaches, and persimmons. In addition, local businesses such as Creative Electrical Contractors and Tharpe Trucking assisted in the fruit tree planting project!
The Southside Virginia Family YMCA entered and won a national contest, "COMMUNITIES TAKE ROOT" sponsored by Edy's Fruit Bars and the Fruit Tree Planting Foundation. The Y's purpose in entering the contest was to teach youth about healthy eating and nutrition as well as to ensure that everyone in our community has readily accessible fruits!
Y COMMUNITY GARDEN
We now have about 100+ Strawberry Plants in our garden. We will distribute to members, After School, Summer Camp, and FACES.
Also, we recently installed a raised bed garden that is located on the back patio. We will probably install one more raised bed that will allow young children, individuals in a wheelchair, active older adults, etc. to use. We hope this will encourage more of our members to get involved and volunteer to help out in our garden since you will not actually be “in the dirt”. PLUS it should be about 100 times easier to maintain!
